On July 9, 2010, we visited 14 places by following the Black Heritage Trail. The day was too hot and few of us brought water through the trip. The weather disgusts us, but we also remember that each of us will give a presentation about a place. Introduced The Phillips School is my mission and I was very glad to do it. In addition, this presentation is totally different from the last one because we need to finish it by cooperate with others.
The Phillips School is typical of 19th century Boston schoolhouses. It was built in 1824 and it was not open to black children until 1855. Finally, the school was then moved to a larger building at the corner of Anderson and Phillips Streets and renamed the Wendell Phillips School. Before 1855, black children had to attend the school on the first floor of the African Meeting House. The Phillips School became one of Boston's first schools with an interracial student body when segregated schools were abolished by legislative act.
In the process of preparing the presentation, I knew the history of this school. Furthermore, I also knew history of other places after listening to other people’s presentation. Therefore, I think this kind of trip is really useful for us.
