Field Trip - Charles Street Meeting House
July 9, a hot and precarious day, trip for Black Heritage is start today.
Today, the Black Heritage Trail Trip total have 10 spots and every body in Husky team has a chance to do a presentation and my presentation is about the Charles Street Meeting House. This is a good opportunity to understand the local US history and to practice my spoken English.
The Charles Street Meeting House was built in 1807 by the white Third Baptist Church of Boston. When the Church was built, the question arose sometime later that people though this church's name "Third Baptist Church" was not strictly the property of the African Church on Smith Court. So the Church's name was consequently changed to Charles Street Baptist Church.
The segregationist tradition of New England Church seating patterns prevailed here.
In the mid-1830s, Timothy Gilbert invited some black friends to his pew, then he was expelled. But Gilbert went on his belief and he found the first Baptist Free Church which became the Tremont Temple, " the first integrated church in America."Today, the Church Street Meeting House is still standing there and shining brighter light.
This is a excellent and rich trip and I'm looking forward next trip!
