Field Trip for Robert Gould Shaw and 54th Regiment Memorial

Today, our destination is located in Beacon and Park Street, Boston Common. It called Robert Gould Shaw and 54th Regiment Memorial. That’s one of the significant symbols of African American history. This 54th Regiment Memorial record a part of history about black and white abolitionists. Although the baking hot sun makes us uncomfortable, we still enjoy ourselves in this Field Trip.
Robert Gould Shaw, a young white officer from a prominent Boston family, also the colonel in command of the all black 54th Regiment, which entered the American Civil War in 1863. Unfortunately, he was killed in a failed attempt to capture Fort Wagner, near Charleston, South Carolina.
Because the black soldiers were finally acknowledged to Union army in 1863, the 54th Regiment became the first of its kind in the North, and was led by Robert Gould Shaw. Sergeant William Carney of New Bedford was wounded three times as he tried to save the American flag from Confederate soldiers.
At the beginning, the 54th Regiment was offered lower salaries that white soldiers. They refused to accept the lower pay and later received the increase.
The 54th Regiment Memorial not only is one of the beautiful landscape of Boston, but also the commemoration of Civil War of 54th Regiment Memorial. In general, all of us recognize more history about Civil War even the Boston 54th Regiment during this fantastic Field Trip.
